Calphalon Contemporary Cutlery, Set with Knife Block, 17-Piece

Revealed: All About Calphalon Contemporary Knives

Your definitive guide to the hot and happening Calphalon Contemporary Knives

I have a confession to make:

I was pretty hard-headed about knife brands and what the best kitchen knife was before I really started writing down my experiences and sharing them with you.

Since then (after listening to your questions and comments) I’ve opened up to a lot of other knife brands and broadened my horizons a little.

One of the newer names that I developed feelings for was Calphalon Knives. Yes, I adore their Katana series and was impressed by the Classic line with its self-sharpening knife blocks (I posted about it in my Calphalon Knives Review article).

But what I didn’t mention there was the Calphalon Contemporary Knives.

Because they deserve a page dedicated to them. It’s as simple as that.

But how does Calphalon compare to Wusthof, Henckels, Global and Shun?

I wouldn’t dare say that Calphalon will someday replace big names like Wusthof. But what I will say is that the manufacturers of these fine knives bring us home cooks the best quality that won’t break the bank, and I’m all for saving where I can.

In short: Calphalon delivers professional quality tools to the avid home cook.

What exactly are Calphalon Contemporary Knives?

Simply put, this is Calphalon’s line of fully forged German steel blades. They can be manually sharpened or purchased as a part of a self-sharpening block set. Think of it as the entry level competitors to big names like Wusthof and Shun.

These knives are forged with a single piece of steel for the blade, bolster and tang to give you strength and durability.

I’ll show you a little insider’s info…

The Calphalon Contemporary Knives Collection – 17 Piece Knife Set Review

First Thoughts:

I was a little skeptical to try out ANY Calphalon knives to say the least.

I mean sure I had heard of the name, but that was mostly in Pots and Pans. Luckily the experience turned out far better than I had imagined.

Calphalon Contemporary Knives are very versatile and the premium grade materials used in construction means these knives were made with durability in mind.

Overall Performance

Since the 17 Piece Cutlery Set from Calphalon’s Contemporary line is a collection in its own right, it comes with all the knives you could possibly need in and around the kitchen.

I really appreciated the high-carbon German stainless steel because it was solid and very strong, much more than I had expected to get considering the cheap-ish price tag.

The handles with their ergonomic designs are great because they’re marked and since they have bolsters for added weight, they have superior balance and put control back in your hands.

Not only did these knives perform well, they also looked amazing. They’re sleek and sophisticated, a look which I’m sure will fit into just about any home cook’s kitchen.

The Best Parts of the 17 Piece Calphalon Contemporary Knife Set (The Pros)

  • The handles are reinforced with fiberglass
  • The blades are rust, corrosion and stain resistant
  • The knives are labeled at the handles for convenience and quick identification
  • It’s a complete collection set
  • It comes with a limited lifetime warranty
  • Considering its price, this is one of the best sets money can buy if you’re tight on cash

The Worst Parts of the 17 Piece Calphalon Contemporary Knife Set (The Cons)

  • As with all good knife brands, you’ll have to wash these knives by hand to avoid rust and pitting
  • Delicate care and cleaning are a prerequisite of these knives, even more so when you’re working with acids
  • The steak knives are crappy
  • Drop one of these knives by accident and it’s broken, just like that
  • The chef’s knife has a large, thick blade that tapers to a fine tip, which isn’t something I’m that comfortable with. I personally don’t need a chef’s knife that can hack its way through a jungle!

Would I recommend it?

Honestly, this is a great set that brings you all the great aspects of the Calphalon Contemporary Knives you could ever need. I can really say that these knives gracefully and elegantly take care of all your slicing and dicing needs in the kitchen.
